Changing the climate for design

The possibilities of design are endless. By using an FSC-certified paper for different kinds of printed material, advertising agencies and designers can do their bit for the environment without detracting from their ideas and creativity.

Arctic Paper has extensive environmental knowledge and has now taken a further step in this area. Since the end of 2006 the entire Munken range has been FSC certified. In addition to FSC the company works to continuously improve its water consumption, energy sourcing and use of chemicals.

Pessimistic or Optimistic?

The Earth is confronted with mounting environmental challenges and debate on the increasing climate threat over the past year has been heated. Arctic Paper has long had extensive environmental knowledge and has now taken a further step in this area. Since the end of 2006 the entire Munken range has been FSC certified. Moreover the company is striving to continuously improve water consumption, energy sourcing and the use of chemicals in its paper production.

Environmental considerations are a natural part of Arctic Paper’s operation. Although the environmental threats in the world today are many and far-reaching, there is a sense of optimism at Arctic Paper that the environment can be changed for the better. Arctic Paper is now starting a campaign for Munken, the aim of which is to place environmental issues in greater focus for us all.

Munken Natural Expressions 2007
Munken “Natural Expressions 2007”, a natural experience in the form of an agenda. Twelve photographs by the British photographer Paul Thompson have been treated with various printing and finishing techniques to enhance the natural expressions. The agenda is printed on Munken, an uncoated design paper that reinforces the natural feeling.

The agenda is printed on the uncoated Munken design papers. The paper is a natural expression in itself, experienced through sight and touch. The agenda is printed in two versions, one on Munken Lynx, Munken Pure and Munken Polar, the latest contribution to the Munken family, a high quality white uncoated design paper. The other version is printed on Munken Print Cream and Munken Print White.

Faces & surfaces

The book “Faces and surfaces” shows 100 faces – from the oneyear- old on page one to the 100-year-old on page 100. Altogether there are several thousand small lines, wrinkles and freckles that demonstrate how an uncoated paper can bring a picture to life.

The book is printed on Munken Print Extra and Munken Print. They are uncoated, high-bulk papers with high opacity. Munken Print is a cream shade and Munken Print Extra is natural white. Because our skin shares many of the properties of paper as we get older – from soft and smooth to slightly rougher and more frail – we are using the different ages of the faces to highlight the different paper qualities. And vice versa.

Creating new ideas should be nice and easy

This is a book that you can fill with new ideas and fine sketches. The paper is Munken Print – an uncoated, bulky, slightly cream shade paper with a smooth, matt surface. Because a book like this should be at hand whenever it’s needed it has to be easy to carry around. Munken Print is a high bulk paper which means ”a lot of pages without a lot of weight”. These 128 pages weigh just 358 grams.

The paper is also ideal for 4-colour printing. The rough, slightly matt surface gives images individual feel and soft appearance. This may be useful to know if producing a brochure, magazine, book or some other piece of printed material.

Contact us at Arctic Paper if you would like to have more information. In addition to dummies, you can also use our website to order A4 sample sheets of Munken Print with printed 4-colour photos.

Wood on wood

Munken proudly presents "Wood on Wood", the sequel to last year's prize-winning success "The Colourbook". "Wood on Wood" is designed to inspire and show designers and printers the creative possibilities of uncoated paper. The book is printed using the FM Screening technique to emphasise the uncoated paper's qualities.

More and more designers have realised that the choice of paper ultimately influences the end-result of different printed material. Interest in uncoated paper has therefore increased in recent years. Today, for example, it is a conscious decision when Karl Lagerfeldt uses Munken for his latest product catalogue, or when Wallpaper is printed on Munken.

"Wood on Wood" is being sent to designers and printers throughout Europe. The different wood images can be downloaded from the web campaign.

The Colour Book

Human beings can distinguish between more than 200 shades of colour, 500 shades of light and 20 different degrees of saturation. This gives a total of 2,000,000 different colours. We have gathered quite a few of them in the Colour book “Moss green, brown, lilac, shocking pink, scarlet and other great colours on Munken Print Extra 18 150 g/m2”.

Colour does not exist. Or at least not to the extent that it can be touched. Colour is light. Our brain receives colour information faster than movement and shape. And that is what a great number of people are working with, that first colour impression that sets the mood.

The Colour book is as entertaining as it is inspiring. It can be used as a note for ADs, designers and other creative people who share our interests. We have printed this Book on Munken Print Extra, a wood-based paper often used in book production. This is also a bulky paper, giving a different feeling, making the product lighter than it looks.

The Colour book has received several prizes during 2002:
